Kids' music downloads of the week: 7 must-have Pete Seeger songs

We were so saddened to hear of the recent death of American folk singer, songwriter and community activist Pete Seeger  whose songs we've adored our entire lives. In honor of his music, we've rounded up 7 of our very favorite versions of songs either written or popularized by Pete Seeger, and performed especially for kids. And knowing the songs, probably our kids' kids too.   1.  If I Had A Hammer A great introduction to Pete Seeger's music with this traditional song all kids should know (and probably do).   2. Skip To My Lou This familiar children's song is rollicking fun with Mr. Seeger's rapid-fire banjo playing and friendly delivery. Found on Stories and Songs for Little Children. 3. Where Have All the Flowers Gone?  Older kids can learn a lot about Pete Seeger's contributions to music by listening any of the dozen songs on Pete Seeger's Greatest Hits, and this modern folk song can start a great conversation about politics and peace. 4.  Quite Early Morning  This poignant song is a Pete Seeger favorite, and it appeared on Many Hands: Family Music for Haiti. Definitely worth a download as a single if not the whole album.   5.  Turn Turn Turn  This special version of the classic performed by by Dan Zanes and Elizabeth Mitchell includes lyrics specifically written for children by Pete's wife Toshi. 6. Little Boxes  One of my favorites for its gentle anti-conformity message, Pete Seeger's hit Little Boxes sounds lush and pretty covered by The Real Tuesday Weld on the album Sing Me To Sleep - Indie Lullabies.   7  Well May the World Go  I simply adore Brady Rymer's guitar-strumming version of this wonderful Pete Seeger track, whose lyrics feel especially bittersweet now: Well may the world go/ When I'm far away.    RIP Pete Seeger. Thanks for contributing to American music in profound ways.
